I found this cute cartoon on YouTube. It's from 1946, and the music is from Benny Goodman & The Pied Pipers. I love Swing! And I was surprised to find out it was made by Disney.

Veronica Lake Inspired fingerwaves
I've been looking at alot of 1940's hairstyles lately. I've been practicing on my hair for a while. My hair is getting longer so I've been looking especially for hairstyles for longer hair. I finally found some great tutorials on YouTube! This one is for Veronica Lake inspired fingerwaves. This girl makes it look so easy! She's so talented. Her name is Ashley and her user name on YouTube is LisaFreemontStreet. She has many tutorials on vintage hair & makeup and they're pretty easy to learn. As I type this, I'm letting my hair set on this Veronica Lake fingerwaves hairstyle from this tutorial. Hopefully it will come out as good as hers!

The Red Balloon
My 3 year old boy (who's turning 4 this month) is enamoured by balloons. I found some from last year's birthday and blew some up for him when he was bored last week. He has kept them since and they're all getting smaller. He was so upset when one of them popped, and with tears in his eyes he said that was "his friend". OMG he needs a sibling. Thank God he starts pre school this year. Well, anyway he reminded me of this movie that I saw in school assembly around 2nd or 3rd grade. It was called "The Red Balloon". Never forgot this movie. I looked it up on you tube, half doubting that it would be there. Lo and behold, it was there. It brought back memories and I showed it to my boy who enjoyed it as well.

Vintage Commercial of Flintstones smoking cigarettes!
This was so disturbing yet interesting to watch! I grew up watching the Flinstones, who of course, never smoked in the cartoon. I was surprised to learn that 1)It was originally a cartoon for adults, shown at night 2)Winston cigarettes co-sponsored the Flinstones for it's first 2 seasons (1960-62)

Better than a box of chocolates!!!!

Well, I don't blame DH for bitching me about spending money the last few months on Ebay and Etsy. These are hard times after all, and I'm a stay at home mom, and I got carried away when I suddenly fell in love with vintage clothing in the past few months! I kind of got addicted with the ease of ordering stuff online and paying through Paypal. Scary! I mean if we were rich, that would be a different story, but...we're not. Anyway, I promised DH I wouldn't order for a while. Then I couldn't help it and got back on Ebay again, with the intention of just looking. Then I saw it, a bautiful black vintage Jantzen bathing suit. I had to have it!! Somebody was surely going to grab it! I called DH while he was working and in my sweetest voice,"Do you love me? You know tomorrow is Valentine's Day right? I'll tell you what I want and I don't want anything else!" So I told him about the vintage swimsuit and he told me to go ahead and buy it! I was so happy! He made my Valentine's Day! He really can be a sweetheart! So, that's my Valentine's Day gift and it's way better than a box of chocolates that I can't eat anyway because I don't eat sugar! I am so excited and can't wait to get it! I'll post pictures when I get it. Happy Valentine's Day hubby! I love you!

Katy Perry's "Thinking of you"
I'm not a huge fan of Katy Perry's, but I just saw her new video this morning and I love her vintage look in this! In some parts she's all 40's and in another, she has a Bettie Page hairstyle and flawless 50's makeup!

Alfred Shaheen- (1923-2008)
I've learned about Alfred Shaheen's fashions a little late...about May of last year, when I was searching for vintage sundresses online. But once I saw some of his dresses, I fell deep in love. His designs are sooo beautiful and one of a kind. I still have yet to purchase an Alfred Shaheen original. Still looking through vintage sites. They don't come cheap. *sigh*
This man won't be forgotten. Here is an article from Vogue:
ALFRED SHAHEEN - the man credited with putting the Hawaiian shirt on the fashion map had passed away in California at the age of 86 due to complications from diabetes on December 22.
Shaheen's distinctively bright floral designs shot to prominence when Elvis Presley wore one on the cover of his 1961 hit album Blue Hawaii and demand for them increased steadily as tourism in the Pacific Island chain grew.
"I would not do harsh prints or chop suey prints," the designer once reflected on his winning aesthetic. "I avoided bright or garish colours."
Inspired by a desire to create a "certain look that was different from everyone else's", original Shaheen designs now regularly fetch up to £750 at auction. Many will remember him as an innovator who changed the shape of the industry by designing, printing and producing aloha shirts and other ready-to-wear items under one roof using high-grade fabrics, dyes, cuts and prints.

More cute finds!!!
I'm getting a little carried away with online shopping, but I can't help it!!! Alot of cute stuff out there! I'm also taking advantage of hubby's generosity lately because in the past he's been kinda tight with the wallet when it came to my shopping. But I'll slow down for a while, maybe until spring time when I'll be on the lookout for sundresses & bathing suits.
I'm soooo excited on my recent finds of a vintage light blue suitcase & a vintage robin's egg colored traincase (Samsonite). Both from Ebay. I also purchased 2 dolls (Barbie sized, but not Barbie.)2 beautiful pricess dresses for them, one pink, one white. 1 pair of silver cateye glasses.
From Etsy I ordered 1 red polka dot shirt and 1 black short sleeved cashmere sweater, a red belt, and a few weeks ago 2 pairs of vintage cateye glasses. I want to put my prescriptions in the new one. I can't wait to get my new stuff! These are my Christmas gifts.

"A woman should be pink and cuddly for a man"-Jayne Mansfield
Jayne Mansfield adored pink. In November 1957 (shortly before her marriage to Hargitay), Mansfield bought a 40-room Mediterranean-style mansion formerly owned by Rudy Vallee at 10100 Sunset Boulevard in Beverly Hills. Mansfield had the house painted pink, with cupids surrounded by pink fluorescent lights, pink furs in the bathrooms, a pink heart-shaped bathtub, and a fountain spurting pink champagne, and then dubbed it the Pink Palace. Hargitay, a plumber and carpenter before getting into bodybuilding, built a pink heart-shaped swimming pool.

Movie: Imitation of Life (1959)
I just saw an amazing movie on TCM called "Imitation of Life" which stars Lana Turner, Sandra Dee, Susan Kohner and Juanita Moore. Directed by Douglas Sirk, it's a melodrama about a widowed mother, Lora (Lana Turner) struggling to raise her daughter (Sandra Dee). Her attempts to forge a career in New York City as a model/actress, is not going well. Annie’s (Juanita Moore) very fair skinned husband abandoned her and it is difficult for her to find work as a Domestic because she refuses to leave her equally fair skinned daughter (Susan Kohner) behind. Lora and Annie strike up a bargain to aid one another. Annie comes to live with Lora. Initially Annie agrees to work only for room and board, caring for Lora’s home and child while Lora goes on auditions. Annie gives Lora a degree of status which eventually brings about Lora’s first big break. The women become lifelong friends. Annie also becomes a substitute mother to Susie as Lora continues to achieve fame. Lora eventually realizes fame is a mere imitation compared to what really matters in life. Unfortunately, Annie is not having success mothering her own child, Sara Jane, who denies her mother and becomes obsessed with passing herself off as white.
Very lovely performance by Susan Kohner in this movie. She reminded me of Natalie Wood so much! Though not Black, Susan Kohner portrayed Sarah Jane. Kohner’s mother was Mexican actress Lupita Tovar and father Czech producer/agent Paul Kohner. Both Susan Kohner and Juanita Moore won an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress in the movie.
I highly recommend this movie if you haven't seen and if you have, see it again!!!
LOVED IT!

Some vintage finds online
I bought some cute vintage dresses (except the cheongsam, it's a repro) and a couple of vintage black vinyl purses. I'm expecting them this week some time. Of course DH thinks I'm nuts because he doesn't get why I like the old stuff. Some people just don't get it. Well I'm very happy and excited to have found these items and at very reasonable prices! Here are the pics:

Elvis & Priscilla Wedding gift set
Well, back from vacation. It was nice. Sunsets were beautiful. *sigh*
Speaking of beautiful, I saw this yesterday online and I so want it!
It's an Elivs & Priscilla wedding gift set. They're from Mattel's Barbie Series.
The dolls, with faces painted to look like Presley and his bride, were designed from photos of the wedding. The groom sports a black paisley tuxedo while the bride wears a white beaded gown and rhinestone tiara.
The couple married in Las Vegas on May 1, 1967, but had split up by early 1972. They formally separated in July 1972 and were divorced in October 1973.
I think they're auctioning autographed ones (signed by Priscilla) in Graceland to mark the anniversary of Elvis' death. Someone offered the high bid of $6800. But I think you can get it for $65 here:

Love with the proper stranger
Taking a little break from packing suitcases for our vacation, (we're leaving tomorrow!). I'm watching "Love with the proper stranger" (1963), starring Natalie Wood & Steve McQueen. Love this movie! I've seen it a couple of times before but every time I see it I'm still very interested in it. It's mainly about a couple who have a one night stand and pregnancy is the result of it. They try to resolve the issue together. Natalie & Steve had very good chemistry together in this film. Natalie Wood always looks so beautiful and vulnerable in her films. Especially this one. Her big eyes are so expressive. Steve Mcqueen is intense & handsome in a rugged kind of way. I haven't seen too many of his movies, but after reading his very interesting biography (online) I'm enticed to see them.

Going back to work?
Well I received both the dress and the bathing suit the other day. I'm very happy with both. They fit great and look good. I can't wait to wear them on vacation. Well, speaking of vacation, we'll be leaving in less than 2 weeks. Hubby & I were talking and I may go back to work part time when we get back. Our toddler is 3 1/2 now and we might put him in preschool in September (*sigh* he's growing up so fast!). So the good news is if I go back to work, I'll have money to buy the stuff that I want, but the bad news is my baby won't take it so well after being with me at home since he was born! But hopefully he'll start school and make friends and see that it isin't so scary. Well, he has start getting used to being apart from me anyway. Me too! LOL!!!
